A judge in Lincoln, Nebraska has thrown out a State Legislator’s lawsuit against God, saying the Almighty wasn’t properly served, because of his unlisted home address. State Sen. Ernie Chambers filed the lawsuit last year seeking a permanent injunction against God. He said God had made terroristic threats against him and his constituents in Omaha, inspired fear and caused “widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants.” Fortunately for him, no matter who you decide to sue there are companies out there who are able to help with a lawsuit loan, since waiting for a lawsuit settlement can be financially draining.

The Senator, apparently, wasn’t actually trying to sue God. He was trying to make a point that the court system should be accessible to all regardless of their power and/or wealth. I mean an unlisted home address? Sheesh. Everyone knows God lives in Jerusalem!

Of course Chambers is appealing. In order for lawsuit to move forward the defendant has to be served. Chambers has argued that because of his/her omniscience, God is already aware of the lawsuit. Clearly folks in Omaha are starved for entertainment. Here’s hoping a well placed lightning bolt smotes Chambers in the butt for wasting the court’s time.

  • As someone from Nebraska, who is registered to vote in Nebraska, and who knows about Ernie Chambers and his AWESOMELY creative antics … I have to say I love that man. He continues to prove the stupidity of so much of what goes on in government. The “wasting the court’s time” is precisely his point.

You should read up on some of his outstanding filibusters.

Amen for being the last unicameral in the U.S.!

  • We’ll be happy to accept service in Rome, then move to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction and forum non conveniens.

  • I cannot believe tax dollars are being wasted on such lunacy. I realize that we are talking about Nebraska here, but really, this is just downright wasteful.

  • Well, you can’t sue Him for global warming:

Thirty years of warmer temperatures go poof
    Lorne Gunther, National Post

In early September, I began noticing a string of news stories about scientists rejecting the orthodoxy on global warming. Actually, it was more like a string of guest columns and long letters to the editor since it is hard for skeptical scientists to get published in the cabal of climate journals now controlled by the Great Sanhedrin of the environmental movement.

Still, the number of climate change skeptics is growing rapidly. Because a funny thing is happening to global temperatures — they’re going down, not up.

Also in September, American Craig Loehle, a scientist who conducts computer modelling on global climate change, confirmed his earlier findings that the so-called Medieval Warm Period (MWP) of about 1,000 years ago did in fact exist and was even warmer than 20th-century temperatures.

Prior to the past decade of climate hysteria and Kyoto hype, the MWP was a given in the scientific community. Several hundred studies of tree rings, lake and ocean floor sediment, ice cores and early written records of weather — even harvest totals and censuses –confirmed that the period from 800 AD to 1300 AD was unusually warm, particularly in Northern Europe.

But in order to prove the climate scaremongers’ claim that 20th-century warming had been dangerous and unprecedented — a result of human, not natural factors — the MWP had to be made to disappear. So studies such as Michael Mann’s “hockey stick,” in which there is no MWP and global temperatures rise gradually until they jump up in the industrial age, have been adopted by the UN as proof that recent climate change necessitates a reordering of human economies and societies.

Dr. Loehle’s work helps end this deception.

Don Easterbrook, a geologist at Western Washington University, says, “It’s practically a slam dunk that we are in for about 30 years of global cooling,” as the sun enters a particularly inactive phase. His examination of warming and cooling trends over the past four centuries shows an “almost exact correlation” between climate fluctuations and solar energy received on Earth, while showing almost “no correlation at all with CO2.”

Other international scientists have called the manmade warming theory a “hoax,” a “fraud” and simply “not credible.”

  • B-D, that article you cited generously ignores a lot of other matters that have been scientifically proven e.g. most endogenous and exogenous influences on climate, city climate due to increased urbanization particularly in Northern America and large parts of Asia, the correlation between melting polar ice caps and temporarily decreasing temperatures in the Northern hemisphere, the obvious and proved migration of certain species due to changes in climate, particularly species harmful to crop but to name a few. Also, it’s important to understand that global warming doesn’t mean tremendous increases in temperature; a temperature rise of 0.5 degrees Centigrade has already sufficed to bring the professional growing of certain types of apples in northern parts of Germany to an end; a rise of 1.5 degrees Centigrade in temperature will in no time jeopardize the agriculture of many nations. Even scientists that claim there is global warming (pretty much the majority) does not deny there are endogenous factors, but they document and analyze the exogenous factors as well. They don’t even deny there was a warm period during the middle ages, interrupted by a “little ice age” due to atmosphere pollution because of a major volcanic eruption the ashes of which darkened the skies till the 19th century CE, but what they point out is that warming currently is happening faster and at a larger scale than during previous periods of warming. Outright rejecting the possibility of exogenous factors on climate and eventually ecosystems is not only naive, it’s downright dangerous and scientifically improper. BTW, one of my brother does research in that field. He also asks to keep in mind that any statistics can be made up in a way that it pleases the person paying the researcher or sponsors a lab, that’s why he’s grateful he’s independent of industrial research.
And as you know, I’m not a fan of Obama.

  • Froylein –
    We’ve debated this before.

I remain firmly unconvinced that human activity has had a significant impact on major global climatic trends.

From the infamous hockey-stick graph to Al Gore’s jeremiads, I see the PC tools of pseudo-scientific fear-n-guilt-mongering everywhere I look on the “it’s all our fault” side of this issue.

Just 30 years ago the same folks were telling us that the “Western military-industrial complex” was causing an ice age – motivated by the same political/ideological agenda.

And check out this site – great recipes, great photography:

I am making the recently-posted yeast plum cake for Shabbat – I’ll let you know how it turns out.

  • Muffti is confused about something – isn’t God everywhere? So why does he need an address. Can’t you just pick any arbitrary address?

  • BD, those both are issues that are related to pollution, one (global cooling) can be caused by pollution of the atmosphere, which, depending on the type, either reflects sunlight back into space or filters it (the infamous kitschy red sunsets are typical of places with high air pollution due to traffic and industries; the soot in the air typically filters out the rays “responsible” for the blue). Global cooling can also be caused when the Gulf Stream gets redirected south because of the pole caps melting. So global warming will, in the long run, bring about an ice age for large parts of Northern America and Central and Northern Europe. But before that, it’ll result in higher tides. (Don’t buy a place in Lower Manhattan, the tide there has already risen considerably over the past few years, and, if it continues rising at this pace, Lower Manhattan will be flooded within fifty years with a rise of the tide of approx 1.50m sufficing to flood the train system and the foundations / cellars of buildings.) Evaluations the particular weather of war years and post-war years have shown that the extraordinarily harsh winters of those years can be linked to pollution caused by warfare. Environmentalism isn’t only about air pollution though; the only state that currently’s got the water reserves to last longer than 150 years at the current rate of its respective demographic development is Canada. The pseudo-scientific side promotes electric cars, ignoring that the electricity needs to be produced somehow. The pseudo-scientific ignore that their resistance to nuclear power doesn’t result in more solar power (still not cost/output efficient in these latitudes) but more coal power plants, which environmentwise are definitely way dirtier in the short run etc.

Thanks for the link; I bought an angel & devil cookie cutter set today. I’ll try out the recipes that came with them over the weekend.

  • Froylein –

I’ve still not seen any credible evidence that pollution has had global, rather than local, environmental impact.

The strongest correlations with climate are to things like sunspots and other solar activity, and related phenomena like global wind patterns (el Nino/la Nina).

China has not stopped for a moment burning megatons of coal in primitive plants – yet the earth is beginning to cool, as predicted by the periodic pattern of solar activity.

Sorry, this is political scaremongering by anti-Western lefties.

The plum tart was a bit overbaked by me, so too dry and bread-like. I think I will try richer babka doughs in the future.

But a lot of the other recipes look great.

  • BD, all data I’ve got access to show temperatures have been rising if even only slightly. Any pollution is of global impact as the dirt doesn’t stay where it’s produced; it gets caried on with the winds. During Gulf War 1, for instance, cars here were covered with sand from Iraq. Unfortunate winds carried a lot of neuclarly polluted soot to Norway after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had exploded. Major vulcano eruptions every now and then show to pollute the atmosphere for a while. Told you, one of my brothers is an environmental scientist, and he’s far from being a leftist; he’s rather your political speed. One always needs to be cautious about who issues the paychecks to those carrying out the studies. And one should feel free to point out the hubris of many do-gooders that e.g. will drive their car to the next big-chain coffee store around the corner to buy a paper cup full of, IMHO, substandard coffee, but if they do, they use their hybrid-technology car. Same goes to those that use reusable coffee filters because they’re oh-so-environmentally conscious, but generously ignore the amounts of water and detergent used in cleaning those filters, let alone the water and raw materials / manmade materials used in their production and packaging as opposed to (often made from recycled raw material) paper coffee filters that are bio-degradable. I’ve more than once voiced my disapproval of “vegan” shoes if they’re allegedly worn out of environmental and animal rights concerns.

Yeast dough can be tricky. Did you use plain white flower or whole grain? I cook and bake with ground gas, so usually when I bake something with yeast dough, I use more liquid, sunflower or raps oil instead of margarine, and let the dough rise in the oven that’s cooling from a previous cake (or just find a similarly warm spot). I use Dr Oetker’s “Hefeteig Garant”, which basically is a mix of dried yeast with baking powder. It always works, plus you only need to let the dough rest once for 15 minutes plus you need not worry about the right temperature of the ingredients. It also works well with whole grain flower and liquid artificial sweeteners when baking for diabetics. Most yeast cakes only need 25 to 35 minutes at 175 degrees Centigrade; they’re done when the bottom is lightly brown (you can usually lift it a bit then). What baking moulds do you use? Since yeast doughs bake fast and in my oven the heat from below is strongest, I put one of the double-layer cookie trays under the moulds so the cakes will bake more evenly and the bottom won’t get too dry.
