NYU students practice spelling

A farce or a protest erupted at New York University this week, when about 7 dozen of NYU’s more than 20,000 students occupied the third floor of a building and made demands of the university. Several hundred supporters demonstrated outside of the Kimmel Center on Thursday, and some scuffled with NYU and New York City public safety officers. The protest is being led by TBNYU, or Take Back NYU, which has called for tuition freezes, budget transparency, greater rights for teaching assistants, pubic access to the main university library, and more respect for NYU employees. Ironically, while calling for more respect for NYU employees, the students injured two public safety employees, one of whom had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment.

So why do I post this on Jewlicious? Because the protest forced students to avoid the Kimmel’s highly trafficked cafeteria? Because two female protestors removed their blouses to get attention? No and No. Come on, you know why… , well, of course, this protest and melee also involves the Middle East. TBNYU, as part of its protest, is demanding that NYU provide 13 annual scholarships for Palestinian students, investigate all investments in genocide profiteers, as well as companies profiting from the occupation of Palestinian territories (they don’t mention if that is pre-1948), and that NYU donate all excess supplies and materials in an effort to rebuild the University of Gaza.

Hurray for student activism ?

  • The University of Gaza aka Islamic University of Gaza. why didn’t NYU students protest after Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav was shot up? Oh, I almost forgot. The Yeshiva wasn’t a rocket factory.

  • Wait a minute… The Kimmel Center is a student center. How can students occupy a student center? If I occupy my bathroom for Palestine, can I get press (and topless NYU coeds)?

  • And what is that got to do with Jewlicious? Jews are not responsible for Israel’s atrocities.

  • These NYU students are somewhat incoherent. Ultimately, they seem to be protesting being rich.

  • being rich? the was a dumb comment dk.
and so what they are requesting scholarships for palestinians. whats Your complaint jewlicious? Find a real story, relevant to your readers… you might want to start with a journalism course at…NYU.

  • Nys, if you cannot see the relevance of this story to our readers, you might want to consider taking logics classes. We’ve got a grand, affordable philosophy professor at hand.

(I’d offer a grammar, orthography, and punctuation class myself, but I’m afraid this would be too much of a strain on your budget.)

  • It is almost amusing to sit back and look at the many student groups throughout America and Europe with their fixed set of ideas about Palestinians as oppressed victims and Israelis as vicious oppressors. The problem is, a few years from now, these same people will be journalists in the mainstream media, lawyers, politicians, professors, teachers, officials in NGOs and the UN. They will be in positions of power in society, with years of anti-Israel rhetoric in their pockets and a large network of people with the same mentality to confirm, applaud and continuously spread their ideas.

  • Take Back NYU rocks!

I love those guys! A team of the world’s best comedic screenwriters could not have scripted their pathetic last stand to play out any funnier. Corporate Water???? That’s the most patently bourgeois thing I’ve heard in a long time. Water is bad, Apple is good? Take Back NYU! is going to ruin the Apple brand altogether; Apple is marketed for slackers, NOT hippies.

And why did Take Back! narrow their goals when they were doing so well and capturing the imagination of the worldwide public? Why did they not fight to achieve protection for the Cape Fear River shiner, one of the most endangered fishes in North America? Or fight to replace the hurtful “MILF” genre of adult film with the less judgmental “experienced women” title?

If only they had not been so pragmatic, this really could have been a changed world. . .

  • Watched the video of the heroic “last stand”. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so pathetic in my life. Funny as hell, too.

A whole hardware store full of tools.

  • They occupied the student center? That student center has been NYU property for ages! What gives them the right to just walk in there like they own the place and occupy it? I don’t care if students have been treated badly in the past, it doesn’t justify this horrible act of oppression. Someone needs to end this horrible regime of Student-Union-Apartheid.

On the bright side, two brilliant female students decided to go topless in 50 degree weather.

  • With a 100 : 1 ratio lately of Palestinians to Jews being killed, how dare you racist Jews speak of anti-Semitism when the world takes offence at Israeli fascism? Why is ultranationalism okay for your little club but for all other countries most of you support liberal cosmopolitanism? Some of you parasite off the proceeds of finance capital, but wish death upon those with nothing. SHAME ON YOU ALL.

VICTORY FOR PALESTINE, CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS BOTH

    OBEY THE GOD OF JUSTICE

And the author should practise spelling, looking at the final line.

  • I don’t recall any mention of anti Semitism in this article so I am wondering where the ignorant claims in the last post come from. You obviously have your own issues with Jewish people to blatantly claim we are racist and ultra nationalistic. Instead of being so ignorant on the issue you should think about the situation rationally instead of letting your own disgusting racist views get in the way. Yes it is awful that innocent civilians were killed by Israeli weapons but how do you feel about the Israelis that were killed by attacks from Gaza? I am so tired of hearing the argument that only Palestinians have suffered in this battle and Jews should go screw themselves because it is just absurd and irrational. So before you judge others and tell them they should be ashamed of themselves you should really reconsider your own position on the issue.

(and to comment further on the problem you have with the author’s spelling, you might want to work on that yourself, practice has two c’s, not an s)
