Vice President Joseph Biden

Muffti wonders if he’ll take a plane or train! The number of famous politicians addressing the crowd is huge (see the bolded part below) and sure to fuel yet more speculation, publication and accusations about ‘the Lobby’ controlling America’s foreign policy. Muffti thinks, naturally, that this is ridiculous but while Israel is an important ally worthy of aid and consideration, it’s a bit creepy (n’est pas?) that it draws more members of congress than ANY event other than a joint session or state of the union. (Is one of our more sensitive readers/posters going to claim that Politico is anti-Semitic for this claim?) It leads Muffti to wonder if such displays are actually all that wise. In any case, according to politico:

Vice President Joe Biden will headline the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual conference, which begins tomorrow in Washington, D.C., a source at the group said.

The announcement that Biden will speak Monday morning comes a day after a victory for the group and the pro-Israel community; the Justice Department decided to drop charges of mishandling classified information against two former AIPAC staffers.

The conference, a chance for AIPAC to flex its unmatched Beltway muscle, is expected draw 6,500 people, and a phalanx of top officials of both parties. Other speakers include Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, Newt Gingrich and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as well as congressional leaders Steny Hoyer, Dick Durbin, Eric Cantor, and Jon Kyl. The event typically draws more members of Congress than any outside a joint session or State of the Union.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will also be addressing the group, live via satellite from Jerusalem, getting up at 3:00 a.m. local time to do it. Rep. Jane Harman, who was investigated in connection with the dropped case against AIPAC staffers, will also be speaking.

  • “a day after a victory for the group and the pro-Israel community”

Uh, a victory for justice and a victory for two innocent men. The “group” (AIPAC) and the “pro-Israel community” (whatever that is) had nothing to do with the dismissal of the case. In fact, AIPAC fired the two men in order to distance itself from their alleged wrong-doing and there is no such fucking thing as a pro-Israel “community.” Unless I’m just not being invited to the parties.

  • 911 Sham?

    AIPAC Bankers?

    Israel-first, dual-national?

    Extortion, blackmail, & bribery?

  • It’s a sign of AIPAC’s decline that it’s featuring Biden, a former senator with no influence.

  • It’s not creepy. America was founded upon a deep sense of identification with the same (biblical) Israel which inspired it. And that’s why it exhibits such a strong and abiding support for modern day Israel – much moreso than the countries of the commonwealth that never bothered to confront the despotic King George or break with his inbred and ridiculously garbed successors afterward. You guys still maintain a stronger sense of cultural identification with an imperial Britain that continues to internalize a sense of civilizational supercessionism, rather than respect the foundational, Judeo-Christian roots of the Western world that it presided over for a limited time.

Its guilt over colonialism in the Middle East must also play a role.

If you want some materials on this, just ask (especially the stuff about America).

On the Liberty Bell is inscribed the following: Proclaim liberty throughout all the land and unto all the inhabitants thereof. (Leviticus 25:10). Where is the equivalent sense of respect for Jewish civilization as an inspiration for one’s own country to be found in Canada? In Britain? In Australia? etc.
