I don’t think we’ve written enough about Drake – the Toronto born Jewish rapper with no less than 12 number-one singles under his belt. So when I saw him on the cover of GQ Magazine, I decided to take the plunge and risk being accused of metrosexuality (ha!) and bought a copy. The fact that the interview was conducted by Claire Hoffman merely sweetened the deal. You might recall that Hoffman did a bombshell interview for the LA Times with Joe Francis, the man behind the “Girls Gone Wild” franchise – what a clusterfuck that turned out to be for Francis, who pulled all kinds of shenanigans while being interviewed, including bringing Hoffman to tears while pinning down her arms. Oh and there was also all the drunk naked 18 year old girls. Francis later claimed that the negative content of the interview was motivated by Hoffman’s jealousy, that she had a bit of a crush on the teen-core porn mogul and was upset that he didn’t pay enough attention to her. Most observers just thought he was skeevy. Clearly Hoffman knows how to get under the skin of her subjects. But I digress.

So what do we learn about Drake? Well, true to his Suburban Toronto roots, his favorite drink isn’t a Colt 44, but rather white wine spritzers. He’s also conflicted about what fame has done to his relationship with women:

“I’m trying to find the same feelings that I had for women when I had very little going on, which is tough,” he says. “When I was in my mom’s house, I had nowhere to go, no real obligations. My girlfriend at the time, if she was mad at me, my day was all fucked-up. I didn’t have anything else. And that made for some of the best music, I think, to date. Records where I felt small. That feeling is hard to capture when you’re sitting out here in a space like this.” He gestures to the pool, the tennis court, the volleyball court, the stables. “It’s really difficult for me to find something that makes me feel small.” … Spritzer in hand, he spreads himself out on the couch and acknowledges that, yes, he had a spell there when he was fucking tons of girls…but that just wasn’t right for him: “There’s just a time where it was like, just getting pussy. Where I was in that sort of ‘I’m young, I’m going to disconnect from my emotions and just do what everyone else tells me I should do and just be a rapper and have my fun.’ And for me as a person, it just doesn’t work. I just need something else. The seconds after a man reaches climax, that’s like the realest moment of your life. If I don’t want you next to me in that fifteen, twenty seconds, then there’s something wrong.”

Wow. That’s the super sensitive soul of a true artist. Afterward, Drake showed Hoffman his bedroom and then asked her if she wanted to sleep with him. Twice. And no. Hoffman’s not Jewish. Sigh.

Drake is now just putting the finishing touches on his new video which he filmed with Lil’ Wayne and DJ Khaled. The video, shot at Temple Israel in Miami, reportedly recreates Drake’s bar mitzvah. Awesome! Way to reprezent. Is it just me or does anyone else miss Public Enemy?
