A latke is a fried potato pancake, often consumed by Jews on Hanukkah to commemorate the miracle of oil – the Maccabees wanted to rededicate the Temple after conquering the Greeks. In order to do so they needed sanctified oil to light the Menorah but only had enough oil to last one day and it would take 8 days to make more. They lit the Menorah anyway and it miraculously lasted the full eight days. That’s why we eat oily food on Hanukkah.
Poutine is a combination of french fries, cheese curds and hot gravy. Invented in Quebec, it’s a hot delicious mess. In 2007, the CBC declared the outcome of an online survey on the greatest Canadian inventions of all time. Poutine arrived at No. 10, beating, among other items, the electron microscope, the BlackBerry, and the paint roller.
And Bacon? Bacon is supposed to be like, Jewish Kryptonite. But the latest news is that it’s everybody Kryptonite. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, just 1.7 ounces of processed meats consumed daily — less than two strips of bacon — can increase a person’s risk for colorectal cancer by 21 percent. Still, the latest Pew survey reveals that fully 57% of US Jews eat pork!
Pork also plays an important role in the Hanukkah narrative. Recall the story of the Woman with Seven Sons. Shortly before the revolt of Judas Maccabeus, the evil king Antiochus IV Epiphanes arrested a mother and her seven sons, and tried to force them to eat pork. When they refused, he tortured and killed the sons one by one. This and similar examples of Hellenistic oppression inspired the revolt and subsequent victory over the Greeks that are the reasons we celebrate Hanukkah.
As such, Epic Meal Time‘s video recipe for a Bacon Latke Poutine is, without a doubt, The Most Sacrilegious Hanukkah Video EVER. And that’s not even taking into account the Jewish prohibition against mixing meat with milk. I mean, if bacon is unkosher, does mixing it with cheese make it even more unkosher? I don’t know. I’m not a Talmudic scholar. But whatever. I’m not offended really, just sad and amused. At least EMT’s presenter Lemme Kno acknowledges that his Bubbie would not be pleased.
