Burqa Babes in Israel

Back in January, Y-Love discussed the issue of Jewish women in the Israeli town of Bet Shemesh taking the concept of modesty so seriously that they started wearing Islamic style burqas – a garment worn head to toe by Muslim women which covers every inch of their bodies. Of course this is a serious issue and merits thoughtful discussion, religious women are encouraged (to say the least) to dress modestly, but most people believe that this development is an affront, overkill if you will.

And then Purim rolled along and we got a treat: a funny Purim video that transcends the holiday! What does life in Beit Shemesh, Israel look like for Jewish women clad in burqas? Watch this hilarious video and find out!

All bow down to Jameel at the Muqata who blogged this first!

My favorite detail was the Laverne & Shirley letter on each burqa.

Sara, don’t worry; from a certain age on people get that way. It’s a very funny clip BTW.

Oh damn, now I’ve gone and offended the maker of the piece herself. I’m sorry, Sara, if I offended. As you can see, everybody else likes it just fine, except for Romolio who would like to be offended.

Based on the number of minutes we spend here in a given year (or month or week), I don’t think anyone needs to worry about themiddle’s theminutes. (Great band name, like “Herman’s Hermits.”)

It’s a really fun clip. I really appreciated the drama of the coffee-drinking scene, which really sold me, because if you can’t drink coffee at Aroma, there’s no point. Where can I get my Jewish burqa with an embroidered E on the lapel?

Also, outstanding use of music…from “Desperate Housewives,” all the way to the end.

Not offended at all!!! Shocked actually at all the views. Can’t articulate it, but was just concerned about you feeling that you wasted your time.
    lol.
BTW – UG – tx for noticing. took our cue from tarantino (lihavdil, not that we touch his holy ankles) who said in an interview once that he chooses a soundtrack in his head first, and then writes a movie around it.

froy – this was our debut. as we are all mothers of four, five or six and all hold full or part time jobs, i think we may have to wait till next purim for another one. bad news for me, b/c it was way too much fun running around BS in a burqa for a day.

Esther is my social director, not to mention my conscience. If she says the “wasted” 4 minutes are nothing to worry about, please assume she’s right. By the way, the burqas completely hide the fact that you’ve all had 4, 5 or 6 children, not to mention the puffy eyes from also having to work!

I didn’t even watch the movie because I think you’re missing the horrible tragedy in the Muqata post – the anonymous comment from 3/24/2008 at 11:42 pm:

“:) lol grate vid. I live in Ramat beit shemsh and often see these ladies around witch gives me the creeps and jut makes me shake my head. Ive seen many od thme in rbs b”

He/she sees them “often” in Ramat Beit Shemesh Bet. Many of them. I’m telling y’all — this trend is on the rise like chometz.

    3/25/2008 at 12:35 pm

Y-Love, that’s why it’s even more imoportant to support and encourage women like Sara and her friends.

  22. Sara E.

    3/25/2008 at 12:41 pm

that’s probably the real reason people wear them. tznius, shmius.

Y-love – u r right – this is a tragic phenomenon, altho it is a self- imposed tragedy which we felt begged a spoof. (And I’m not sure the trend is on the rise; I am far more worried about many other more pervasive aspects of Orthodoxy.)

…However it is even more tragic than we realized when making the vid…see

not sure if this means our clip had amazing – or really terrible – timing.

What is all this talk about carbs?

VERY WELL DONE! Ribbono S. Olam can waste my 4 minutes anytime! Soundtrack was awesome!

BUT, it is important to keep SERIOUS discussion of extremism and fanaticism going in a respectful manner (as difficult as that may be… “I’m too sexy”…ROTFL!)

If I see this trend arise in Plifton, I’m moving to a nude beach in Costa Rica and my kids can join me when they graduate Yeshiva.

Chutzpah, don’t think there are any naked beaches in Costa Rica. Gotta steer clear of them Catholic countries if you’re interested in that pursuit.

Someone remind me again why men don’t have to dress modestly. Something about jogging shorts and weenies bouncing around…

This is nothing new. The burka actually predates islam by many centuries….Might be tough for a lot of israelis to acknowledge this but there you go…just an example
