Whacky!

One is a highly placed political insider, the other is a high profile media mogul. They also hate each other and this exchange took place when they came face to face at an Israeli Independence Day Party. “Feh. Another day in Tel Aviv.” is what you’re probably thinking. Nothing news worthy there, eh? Except this didn’t happen in Tel Aviv. Or Jerusalem. It happened in Peru.

The author of these words is Eliane Karp, the wife of Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo. The recipient was Baruch Ivcher, Peru’s most powerful television mogul. Both had worked to topple the corrupt government of Alberto Fujimori. Both are also Israelis. Read this entire bizarre story here (props to Forward – requires free registration).

  • The spat has gained Ivcher an implacable foe in Adam Pollak, who immigrated to Peru from Romania in 1965 and befriended Ivcher when he arrived from Israel in the mid-1970s.

    “If he needs something, he’s with you,” Pollak said. “If he doesn’t, he’s against you. He’s a guy you cannot trust. I don’t want to see him anymore.”

    When this correspondent read these comments to Ivcher, he took a deep breath — almost as if he had been punched in the stomach. He waited several moments before speaking. “Adam Pollak was my best friend,” he said finally. “I’m shocked [at his comments], really shocked.”

    That is great reporting! I love this section of the article about how even powerful and successful men still need community and friends.
