  • Can I be honest and admit two things?

1 – I am posting on Shabbos, and I feel a little bad about it. (CK, please don’t bring up the fact that I posted on Yom Kippur)

    2 – I don’t know the difference between its and it’s, really.

  • it’s = it is

its = a property of something or belonging to something.

It’s a beautiful sunset = It is a beautiful sunset

Its a beautiful sunset = fail the essay

The ripe pomegranate exploded and released its seeds = the seeds of the pomegranate

The ripe pomegranate exploded and released it’s seeds = fail the course

  • It’s nice of you to explain this, it’s something I should know.

    Good?! (::blushing::)

  • You’re among friends here, ask away. If Anne were here, I’m sure she would have explained this better.

  • Ok, I’ll ask away…tell me the linguistic origins of the schwa?

  • I actually used to know this once upon a time. I doubt I’ll remember the reason, but I’ll try…

  • I read that post by TM, and the little Comments (0) was calling my name. I knew it would turn into a fight, so I made a choice to just stay out of it. 74 posts later, I’m glad I did.

I followed the discussion along with some interest. Everyone made some good points. I really liked this line by ck:

Firefox is free for the asking T_M you just gotta want to go and, you know, get it …

(for the record, I don’t use firefox)

I also suggest everyone go and re-read Rabbi Yonah’s posts again. There was a lot of good stuff in there that I think a lot of people glossed over (judging by the comments).

PS: “schwa” is totally a Wayne’s World reference.

  • Neocon, I hope that wasn’t considered fighting. Trust me, you’ll know when it’s a fight. That was a debate with people who sit on different sides of the equation. They opened my mind to some ideas and I hope theirs was opened in turn.

  • I’d like to respectfully disagree with Neocon’s comment: “schwa is totally a Wayne’s World reference.” “Schwing” or “Scha-wing” is obviously a Wayne’s World reference, schwa is a grammatical pronunciation thing, and “Schyeah” or “shyah” is a Wayne’s World reference: a combination of “sure” and “yeah.”

  • Ziva, I conceed the point. You are correct that it is “schya” and not “schwa”

I had to think of it in context to be sure:

“Schya, and monkeys might fly out of my butt”

  • Hahahahah, I had to do the same! So, here we are, keeping Jewlicious up to its academic standards of intelligent discussion!
