Al quds is ours! mwahhahahaha!Hey remember that conference last week, “A World without Zionism,” where Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad promised to wipe Israel off the face of the earth? Well, you may recall that the conference was held in anticipation of Al Quds Day. Al Quds is one of the names for Jerusalem in Arabic, it means”holy city,” similar to the hebrew version, Ir Ha Kodesh. So turns out that Al Quds Day, which is listed on many interfaith and University calendars is not a religious holiday. It is, in fact a made-up holiday, created by the late Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran. The purpose of Al Quds Day is to call for the destruction of the state of Israel.

I know, it seems like in some places, every day is Al Quds Day! Anyways, a group of Berlin-based activists has been hard at work getting the “holiday” removed from calendars around the world.

The point is not just to clean up calendars, political scientist Arne Behrensen, a co-founder of the activist group, told JTA, but “to engage the political left in confronting Islamism and Islamist anti-Semitism.” … Behrensen chose to focus on the calendars after reading a lecture by Mansoor Limba, an Iranian, in Malaysia in December 2004. Limba spoke with pride of how Al Quds Day was becoming accepted as an Islamic holiday around the world, recognized by a long list of organizations, including some Jewish ones.

Damn. There go my plans for a combo Al Quds Day/Halloween blowout for this time next year in Jerusalem. Muffti was gonna show up dressed as Haj Amin Al Husseini and I was gonna come as Pontius Pilate. It woulda been so cool! Aw man …
