4th candle

Happy 4th night of Hanukkah. To hell with style guides. I’ll spell it any damn way I please. Today was fun-o-ramma for ck! I ate Ethiopian with Harry, Michael and Laya. Then we had some sfenj and sufganiyot – Yum! Afterwards we met some nice Nazis on Ben Yehudah street. They were reenacting the Warsaw Ghetto uprising as part of the city of Jerusalem Chanuka celebrations. I know Jewschool posted it first, titled Zionazis but we took the picture first. I know this cuz I ran into Mobius after I took the pic, whereas he was on his way to take the pic. So no bitterness, ok? Anyhow without further ado, here are the Nazis:

I also killed some Hellenist centurion dude. That woman and baby next to him may or may not be Mary and baby Jesus. I have no idea what they were doing there – in any case, I didn’t kill them. Really.

Death to Hellenists

So seasonal, eh? Well… chag sameach! That means happy holiday and no – there is no war on Hanukkah. Except by David Kelsey who may hate the Hasmoneans, but apparently no longer hates some of us. Woohoo! With all this ahavat chinam, can the Messiah be far behind? Will the 3rd Temple fall from the sky?? Hallelujah!

  • 3rd temple from sky,
    not only kuah opinion.

As for the candles, I want to suggest you guys get yourselves the do-it-yourself olive oil set, either the plastic cups with a tube that you fill with oil and a wick, or the ready-to-use pre-filled cups. Regular candles last up to one hour, olive oil (for lighting, not edible) lasts for hours and the price is virtually the same anyway.

  • I’m really sorry I missed all of this reenactment business. Too busy at Rothberg. My hanukiah is made of tealites and aluminum foil. Less than 10 argurot a night to celebrate the defeat of the Romans! Beat that!

  • Josh wrote: olive oil… lasts for hours

Puh-leeze. Mine lasts for days. 😉

But make sure you get the ones with the Kohen Gadol hecture/seal on it.

  • I must be the only one who went to the Baby Jesus link. Ummm- totally shocked and horrified. Who would think of a thing like that anyway?

  • Made very nice stained glass hanukiot this year with my kids. Hopefully they will hold together better than last year’s, which were made of colored glass marbles glued together – gorgeous by the glue didn’t hold up so well.

The pre-filled oil thingies are very convenient, but an ecological disaster. Best improvised menorah I’ve seen this year are simple, lentil-shaped floating candles in rich colors on a lucite slab.

    Happy Hanukah!

  • An old school Nachlaot tradition is to fill shot glasses with water- add an array of food coloring for a rainbow effect and then top it off with oil and put in the wicks.

  • Also, this is the second time we’re seeing ck with a black shirt/sweater and fatigue/camouflage pants. Don’t make us have to call the Israeli branch of the fashion police. 😉

  • Oh David you missed a fun time last night. Mom made soufganiot (!!!) and surprised us all with a big turkey dinner, homemade cranberry sauce and all. She also made latkes w/ applesauce. I mean, mom smaking latkes and cranberry sauce?? Unheard of! Our mother is full of surprises… Lemonsquares(?!)
Btw, why don’t you ever wear jeans?
