8 nominations?

It’s that time of the year again… welcome to the 2005 Jewish Israeli Blog Awards. Last year I was kind of a dick about the whole enterprise. I announced that we didn’t qualify because we weren’t Jewish – we were Mormons with Jew-envy. Apparently lots of folks saw through my stupid ruse and we ended up getting 6 nominations and winning a whole mess o’ JIBs (Best Overall Blog: 3rd place, Best New Blog 2004: 1st Place, Best Group Blog: 2nd Place, Best Designed Blog: 2nd Place, Best Israel Advocacy Blog: 2nd Place, Best Jewish Culture Blog: 3rd Place). Afterwards I kinda felt bad. See, Dave from Israellycool is a totally awesome guy – chill, hard working, super nice and a totally great blogger and podcaster in his own right. I resolved to be far more supportive next time around, and that time would be now.

So while modesty prevailed and I made no mention of the nomination process, we still managed to snag no less than 8 nominations this time around. We were pretty well trafficked last year and we have even more daily visitors this year but I still think that a repeat of last year’s success is not in the books for us this year – and that’s not neccesarily a bad thing.

See, 2005 saw an explosion in the creation of every manner of new Jewish blogs. It seems to me that competition will be much fiercer this year and perusing both the new and more familiar Jblogs, I can’t help but be humbled and pleased. We won’t be able to coast by on the strength of our pretty pictures and scantily clad babes. I say this despite the addition of 2 new writers to the Jewlicious roster – props to Michael and his sardonic wit and props to Esther, queen of all media (who received 3 nominations for My Urban Kvetch and JDaters Anonymous – woot!). Thus I urge you all to check out the list of nominees (there’s some fine bloggage there), stay up to date on the latest JIB news and vote wisely, starting Jan 9th. We will of course keep you updated on developments as they happen – not because we’re sucking up, but because Israellycool Dave is the shiznit, he got the Jerusalem Post to co-sponsor the awards, and we wanna be supportive.

Besides, it sucks being even a pretend Mormon.

  • You know that Shiznit is Tatuahoolian for “short man with a large head” don’t you.

  • You know, they say it’s an honor just to be nominated, but it’s a little sad knowing that this year I have no shot of winning. I mean, how’m I gonna get Dolce and Gabbana to dress me for the awards show?

[calms down] Right. It’s an honor just to be nominated. And there are some amazing new blogs to be met and blogrolled, which is totally the important thing, the expansion of the J-blogosphere, and of the global conversation that is Jewish blogging…

And yes, a hearty yasher koach to Israellycool Dave, for partnering with the JPost, which will hopefully bring him some help with this enormous undertaking this year.

  • Jack, I thought shiznit meant funny man with Australian accent?

Esther, you and the J-Licious crew are gonna clean up the big awards, but it’s sweet of y’all to think newbies like mwaa have a shot.

  • My favorite Hebrew subtitle ever was in the Adam Sandler movie Little Nicky. The original line was “Popeye’s chicken is the shiznit!”. The subtitle said “Popeye’s chicken yoteir tov mi-schnitzel.”
