This, of course, is the arch representing the historic Hurva Synagogue destroyed by the Jordanians during 1948 when they forced out all the Jews of East Jerusalem and took over the Old City. Although it is now a ruin, with merely some access built for tourists, along with this commemorative arch, it is back in Jewish hands where it is safe and cannot be desecrated. You can read some of the history and the plans to rebuild it here.

Read a great shabbat post at Muqata.

Shabbat shalom.
