Abbas told Condoleeza Rice last week that he would work toward getting Hamas to recognize Israel. He then turned around and gave an interview in Arabic to an Arab reporter where he specified that nobody, including his compatriots at Fatah, needs to recognize Israel. They do, however, have to recognize their counterparts in the Israeli government if they are to be part of the Palestinian government. Shades of Arafat.
