Journalist Jody Rosen has put together an album called Jewface with Reboot Stereophonic, and had a long and interesting interview today on Fresh Air. Jewface is:

It’s the first anthology of Jewish minstrel songs. Tracks include “Cohen Owes Me 97 Dollars,” “I’m a Yiddish Cowboy” and other long-lost hits from the vaudeville stage of the early 20th century.

Sit back and enjoy the vintage tunage.

  • Last fall the Sunday New York Times carried a lengthy feature piece on this project and its creators– worth retrieving for those with a Times account.

  • TM I was just going to say the same thing. I do wonder if it will have the same issues that Borat had, per the NYT article.

The article discussed the idea of self-effacing anti-Semitism and its roots in the Yiddish theater. I personally don’t believe that a Yiddish musical collection will have the same appeal as a major motion picture, but that remains to be seen.
