monkey?

Marty Beckerman’s tongue in cheek piece in Jewcy about ROI120 is indeed hilarious. Despite his trademark scathing tone, I know Marty LOVES the Jews and the Jews love him. Yet, despite the good natured kvetching, one commentor, in typical style made this story all about him (If you want to visit the site, right click on the link and paste it onto your browser, otherwise, thanks to Mr. Mature, you will be redirected to a porno site). This ROI alumnus made all sorts of unsubstantiated claims and then illustrated his story with an image that cast aspersions on all the ROI participants. Well, at least he was right about one of them…

  • dave — are you SOOOOOO insecure about the quality of your event that you can’t even take a single shred of criticism about something that happened A YEAR AGO without having to “fire back”?

  • It wasn’t my event Dan – I was a tiny part of the whole thing. The fine folks behind ROI120 worked hard to make it as productive as possible and have always been open to criticism. What no one likes is the false assertion that the organization was somehow interested in stealing your ideas, or that they in fact “robbed your gate” so to speak. The contempt you harbor was clearly demonstrated by the image you chose to illustrate your post – an image that ridicules not just the organization, but also all the participants.

Seriously Dan, I respectfully suggest you either moderate your tone and guard your tongue or take off that picture of the Chofetz Chaim from your Web site. Your behavior makes a mockery of his life’s work.

  • oh please — you are the last person on earth who should be lecturing ANYONE on morals and ethics.

  • oh dave, you are so the last person on earth to be giving me lectures in moral conduct. i’m just biding my time til it allll comes out.

  • Oh shoot! I better keep my opinions to myself then! Dan is biding his time! Sorry Dan!

  • Here is my comment on Jewcy:

    Dear Marty,

You are hilarious. A bit on the explicit side, but very very funny. I would have liked to have read some interviews with the participants, and have a chance to get more perspective. You did mention at the start you were an objective journalist…

That aside, I think that the organizers invited you shows they were not interested in a whitewash. They knew who you were, because you are famous.

It is strange they changed your answers. And that fuels your argument that the whole thing was a set-up.

When all is said and done you said “I might not understand them or their nonprofit world, but maybe they will make a difference someday.”

And lastly, you write “Correct me if I’m wrong but the thirteenth-century Kabbalists didn’t equate tikkum olam with campaigning against factory farms, which by the way are awesome.”

The aforementioned Kabbalists of the 13th century did not equate Tikkun Olam with contemporary social and eco-justice movements, in my humble opinion.

They did emphasis though that what a person sows they ultimately reap, and how we treat each other and the environment will and does have an affect our our lives and our children’s lives.

    Sincerely,

    Rabbi Yonah

  • Honestly Mobius, from reading your blog, you seem about the last person who should be lecturing someone about being insecure or firing back. You take EVERYTHING personally (i.e. anything anyone says about your blog, etc), and you fire back more often than a drunk off-duty new york city police officer faced with a kid holding a water pistol. Seriously Mobius, I don’t know what high horse you rode in on, but come on down before you hurt yourself.

  • This Marty Beckerman is a wise and interesting man. I may buy his book on Alibris.

  • JM, before you buy anymore puritanical, misogynistic “scholarship”, spend an hour on a woman’s erotica site. Trust me, sexually “liberated” rocks sexually “repressed” anyday.

  • Have you read the link? He is not very puritanical, as far as I can tell. I don’t detect any mysogyny either, under the gruff exterior, or claims to scholarship. I will see when the books come.

It’s not a big deal. I read lots of things.

But I am impressed that he is not a fine, upstanding, Jewish professional, quality boy. No, I don’t think so, unless he is very, very undercover.

I need a chaser after the recently discussed Rhodes scholar and Harvard law professor. With curly hair.
