I get that Heeb owns the whole over-the-top, subversive, irreverent, gratuitous space in Jewish culture rags, but really their latest promo ad is just a little too much even for those of us that get their humor and can kinda make head(s) or tail(s) of their apparent lustfest with Sarah Silverman.

This video begs the question, however: Is mutilating genitalia really ever called for? Even when/if it’s associated with Barbra Streisand?

  • WTF?

    I mean, just WTF?

    There are no words.

If this is what it means to be a “Jewish hipster” include me out.

    Sick, sick, sick.

  • Clever?

The oh-so transgressive point that gentiles have to circumcise themselves if they want to sleep with Jewish women?

Or that the sight of Jewish women makes gentile men want to cut part of their dicks off?

    What?

Total bullshit, the whole thing. I cant believe that the Heebsters occupy themselves with this sort of puerile trash. It’s an absolute disgrace that these people are Jewish.

  • I like and I don’t like Heeb. I like that it exists because it opens the door for interesting, controversial discussion about Judaism and Jewish culture between young Jews. But when I look at the actual substance, I don’t like it. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the dentist converts for the jokes. Seriously, this is all you have to talk about, Heeb? Every time I open it, I feel like there is the potential for some interesting discussions/articles/thoughts or opinions to be presented, and instead I get this shallow, in-your-face-simply-to-be-in-your-face stuff.

  • This is just the Jewish equivalent of a kid getting a cheap thrill out of telling a girl his first dirty joke just so he can see her shocked reaction. Absolutely infantile.

These people should grow the fuck up and stop embarrassing us. You want a shande fur de goyim? Well, this is it.

  • Look. The state of Jewish literacy is such that one can only the have the most basic of discussions with the bulk of American Jews about anything substantially Jewish. When people ask me in all seriousness “Who is this Hashem guy I keep hearing about?” you’re not exactly going to follow up with a discussion on Beit Hillel vs. Beit Shamai. When young Jews have never even seen a pair of teffilin and have no idea what they are, how are you going to discuss the concept of kitniyot on Passover and the role of Rabbinic Judaism in the post second temple era? The best we can hope for at this point, other than the institution of universal free Jewish day schools, is an ongoing conversation that might hopefully result in the generation of some kind of curiosity and interest in the otherwise neglected tradition, way of life or belief system that has sustained our people for thousands of years. In that respect, as shocking as they sometimes are, Heeb has succeeded where the combined resources of all our various Rabbinic institutions, synagogues and community organizations have failed miserably.

So there, that’s my 2 cents.

  • I was hoping this would be subversive, but I have to agree with Ephraim that it’s the equivalent of a kid telling a dirty joke. It’s very bland. (As I often have to remind my students when we work on humorous essays, sex in and of itself is not INHERENTLY funny.)

And I shouldn’t have watched this while eating breakfast.

  • Re: Post #3…he didn’t “cut part of his dick off”, he “circumsized” himself. If Jews called it that, we probably wouldn’t want to do it to our baby boys. We learn about grown men doing that very thing for that very reason in several chapters of the Torah, starting with Avram, but he wasn’t watching t.v. at the time.

    Re: Post #7…Nu Esther…Nip/Tuck? Thoughts…discuss…

Re: Post #9… generally a large breakfast of bagel and lox FOLLOWS a circumcision and is not eaten WHILE watching the procedure.

  • Sigh.

Jewish men need to be circumcised.

    Gentile men don’t.

And I’m quite aware that being circumcised means that part of your dick gets cut off. Euphemisms are not necessary.

The reason that thing was so grotesque is because the self-circumciser was so obviously gentile. There’s something creepy and insulting and weirdly self-congratulatory about the whole bit.

Oh, yeah, and infantile. Did I mention infantile?

  • What a relief that my parents did the right thing back in the day– there’s no reason to take matters into my own hands.

  • When did the word “circumcision” become a “euphemism”? That it is the proper name for the procedure and “cut part of the dick off” is slang, neither is a “euphemism”.

Gross and infantile…yeah, but still sorta funny in a “There’s something about Mary” kinda way.

  • Re: usage of the term “beg the question”: “More recently, to beg the question has been used by some as a synonym for “to raise the question”, or to indicate that “the question really ought to be addressed”. For example, “This year’s budget deficit is half a trillion dollars. This begs the question: how are we ever going to balance the budget?” This usage is often criticized by proponents of the traditional meaning, but has nonetheless come into sufficiently widespread use that it is now the most common use of the term.”

  • I’ve largely given up on “nauseous vs. nauseated” (“nauseous” originally meaning something that causes nausea, not someone who experiences it–as in “this nauseous video makes some people feel nauseated”). But I’m not giving up on “begs the question” just yet!
