As I was flipping through the pages of Süddeutsche Zeitung. Wissen in the staff room the other day, I discovered something that apparently made me illicit sounds of awe (I do hope they were perceived as sounds of awe as they, afterall, made my colleagues turn their heads). And really, I was awestruck. It wasn’t a pair of fabulous high heels though that had caught my attention, not even a precious piece of jewellery, but ravishing photographies of “gems” of sorts.

As I really loved what I saw – and thought so would our readers – I contacted the artist, Dr Gary Greenberg, and asked his permission to introduce his artwork and his book A Grain of Sand – Nature’s Secret Wonder. The Amazing Microphotography of Dr. Gary Greenberg on Jewlicious. Gary showed to be an absolutely nice person and even permitted me to use images and information from his website.

Gary Greenberg is one of a growing number of artists who creatively combines art with science. As a photographer and filmmaker, he united his artistic skills with a love for science. Coupling his cameras to microscopes he began to explore the microscopic fabric of nature. At the age of 33, he moved from Los Angeles to London, to earn a Ph.D. in biomedical research from University College.

Dr. Greenberg was an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California during the 1980’s, until he co-founded Edge Scientific Instrument Corporation in the 1990’s, which developed research microscopes for University and Industry scientists. He is a prolific inventor with 17 patents for high-definition three-dimensional light microscopes.

Since 2001 Dr. Greenberg has been using his special microscopes to create dramatic landscapes of worlds beyond our everyday perception – worlds where reality is seen as abstract form and color, motion and texture.

Gary has teamed up with Voyageur Press to put his simply amazing photography into book format; the book features absolutely breathtaking close-up photographies of sand from all over the world.

Gary’s photography clearly shows how extraordinarily beautiful our planet is.

I encourage you to browse Gary’s site, where you’ll find more more of his artwork and information on the book.
I bet your science lessons hardly ever got this picturesque.

P.S.: Gary, mind if I mail you some sand?
