Today’s shooting by an 88-year old white supremacist at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC is a terrible reminder of the need for greater cross cultural tolerance and understanding in this country. That the attack took place at a memorial to the tremendous loss of life during the Holocaust underscores this tragedy.

We extend our condolences to the family of Stephen T. Johns, the security guard whose life was cut short by this vicious act. You can read more about the shooting here.

Even in the U.S., a country of great freedoms, only Jews remain, in the words of Rabbi David Saperstein, “the quintessential victims of religious intolerance and hatred in western civilization.”

As horrific as the vent is, I think that the above statement is excessive. Doctor killed in church. Students killed in schools. Army private shot outside recruiting station, and of course, how many African American churches have been burned and bombed over the years.

Even as we Jews lament and highlight the hatred that we face, we must forget that we’re in this together with many others.

  • This kook also hated George Bush. I guess you’d call an “equal opportunity nut case”.

And no, Jews are not the only ones who fear attack – can we please get past the Miss Victim America pageant.

  • Well, since both Ed Greenberg and Ben-David beat me to it, I guess I have nothing to say except, “Amen!”

  • 2nd Step… learn self defense, buy and learn to use weapons, and stock up before ammo costs exceed the weapons themselves.

  • I’ve been beat, but the Muslims, especially post 9/11? We’re not even close to being the only ones chastised for our religion in this country.
