Thanks to my Twitter friend Koshmarik, I procured a wonderful book this week:

DSC02003

It’s chockful of beautiful pictures and little descriptions about Israel for kids by Czech guy M. Sasek. Normally, I am leery of Czech people and the Czech Republic in general, but this is a gem of a book. It was written in 1962, but it’s still mostly relevant to political boundaries today.  It’s also not dumbed down in any way, the way a lot of childrens’ books are,  and I wouldn’t hesitate to read it to my imaginary MENSA wunderkind child.   As a fun little activity, I’ve taken pictures of some of the artwork, and you can guess which part of Israel it portrays.  Answers will be revealed in the comments.

  • I had a whole bunch of stuff typed and then clicked on a picture by mistake and lost it all!@$##!#@$!#@

    My guesses (complete guesses)

1 – Tel Aviv. Migdal Shalom going up (completed 1965)

    2 – Zefat, gallery is a hint.

    3 – Caesarea.

4 – Sort of looks like Yemin Moshe, but it isn’t. Probably Tiberias or somewhere near the kinneret.

5 – Very tough one. Maybe the border at the end of Rechov Yaffo with Jordan? But building style doesn’t look like Jerusalem at all! Maybe border at Rosh Hanikrah? Maybe border right before Chamat Gader?

6 – Easy, easy, easy. Clock tower at entrance to old Yaffo (Jaffa).

7 – A yeshuv in the Arava. Maybe Yotvata?

  • Since Mark is so good, I’m going to reveal the answers, cause you guys are no fun. 😉

    1. Tel Aviv
    2. Tsfat
    3. Caesaria
    4. Be’ersheva
    5. Mandlebaum Gate
    6. Yaffa
    7. Yotvata

  • I can’t believe I got #7 right!!!!! It seemed Arava-like, and I was wracking my mind to think of yeshuvim in the Arava that were around in 1962. The main reason I know about Yotvata is because of their restaurants and milkshakes 🙂
