The self proclaimed Beit Din of the Orthodox Community of Israel has released a statement warning righteous God fearing Jews against uhm… walking in public with their wives. What was once thought to be an innocuous and harmless activity turns out to be a severe prohibition – anyone that continues in this nefarious activity risks harming himself, his family and all the Jews wherever they live. They cite a new understanding of the Torah as the source for this new insight. But for some reason they don’t cite, you know, chapter and verse. Apparently, when one sees a husband and a wife together one can’t help but imagine them getting jiggy. Especially if the man is bearded and clad in black and the wife is dressed modestly and wearing one of those torpedo shaped hats. Mmmmm… hot! I am being severely sarcastic by the way.

Honestly, I try to be somewhat tolerant of my Haredi brothers (and sisters?) but, you can’t just make up ridiculous stuff like this. Oh wait. You can.

(As in this Beit Din which claims to trace it’s rabbinic smichah pedigree to anshei knesset ha g’dola most definitely pulled this “chumrah” out of their asses. The question that remains unanswered is, if the husband and wife are separated and the husband, because he’s a dick, refuses to give his wife a get and this genius Beit Din can’t help the agunah because while the Torah supposedly has very firm rules in place regarding modesty but nothing about helping a sister out when her husband’s being a dick… in such a case, since they’re not having sex, could a man walk in public with his agunah wife in order to collect cash that he swindled from her and her family in order to maybe grant said divorce?)

  • You sephardisheh Moderns need to understand that a wife is not to be paraded around the shuk like a camel.

  • I suggest you focus on the wonderfully organized moral code of secular culture before sticking your nose into societies you have no understanding of whatsoever.

    • Sorry DN. I am equally critical of secular culture. And this society that you claim I have no understanding of whatsoever? I understand it all too well. Where is the Torah source for this patently ridiculous chumrah? Where is it DN?

      • I’m not saying there’s a source for it. I’m saying secular society, and jewish secular society has no sources whatsoever and falls further into the abyss of immorality and mayhem every day and champions of that society would do well to worry about their own “sources”

        • My sources are the Torah and actual Gedolim. Like say:

          ?? ?? ???? ??? ?? ???? ??? ??? ???? ????? ???? ???? ???

For those that don’t read Hebrew: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.”

Now of course there are all kinds of interpretations of this pasuk – but this new Chumra seems to violate its spirit.

          • I think you’re missing my point. I’m not saying the above poster isn’t a bit extreme, or that it is within the spirit of the law etc.

What I’m saying is that secular people criticizing how frum Jews attempt to achieve modesty within their society is a bit like someone sinking on the titanic criticizing the amenities of your lifeboat.

            Just sayin.

  • So the wife gets to go out alone but she is not permitted to go out with her husband. That makes lots of sense. She’s better off by herself, isn’t she?
