Are we going to have to create a separate category for France or what? Todays noteworthy tid bits? Well, for starters, today is the 62nd anniversary of the Vel d’Hiv roundup. On this date in 1942, 8,160 Jews, mostly children, were shipped off to Auschwitz after being rounded up by the French gendarmerie. This grim anniversary, representing one of the blackest days in French history, was commemorated all across France. At a ceremony in Square of Jewish Martyrs in Paris, Veterans Minister Hamlaoui Mekachera said The struggle against vile acts that we hear about in the news … requires permanent vigilance by citizens along with the responsibility of remembering the past.
Hmmm. Remembering the past? Well, in reaction to the rising tide of anti-Semitic violence in France, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suggested today that maybe French Jews might find Israel a bit, you know, more hospitable: If I have to advise our brothers in France, I’ll tell them one thing — move to Israel, as early as possible. I say that to Jews all around the world, but there [in France] I think it’s a must and they have to move immediately
French Foreign Ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous said:We have been informed of comments made today by Sharon calling on the Jews of France to emigrate to Israel. We immediately made contact with the Israeli authorities to ask for an explanation of these unacceptable comments.
I’ll give you an explanation dumbass. Open season on French Jews. Again. How’s that?
UPDATE: Now it appears that the French have decided that Sharon is no longer welcome in France. Word of advice guys, spend less time getting indignant, and more time defending the physical integrity of your citizens.
