Summer 1969. The moon landing. Woodstock. The whole culture shifting overnight. That’s the backdrop for this story about a Jewish housewife from Brooklyn named Pearl Kantrowitz who, while vacationing in the Catskills, starts asking herself if there’s more to life than what she’s got.
The 1999 film A Walk on the Moon captured that moment. Now there’s a new musical adaptation playing off-Broadway, and it works.
The story follows two parallel awakenings. Pearl is a housewife beginning to wonder about possibilities beyond the life she’s always known. Her teenage daughter Alison is going through her own summer of firsts: first period, first date, first kiss. Both of them are waking up at the same moment. Both questioning who they are and who they want to be.
It’s intimate and specific, rooted in a very particular Jewish-American experience, but also utterly universal. Who hasn’t felt that tension between duty and desire? Between the life you were supposed to live and the one you might actually want?
And the musical? People like it! The vocal harmonies are described as “particularly gorgeous,” and the production itself – the direction, design, performances – gets consistent praise. It’s a “comfort nosh” as one review put it. It’s theater that honors where we come from while asking us to think about where we’re going.
