Die. Now.This. Is. Just. Wrong.

What do you get when you combine traditional klezmer music with bluegrass and modern dance? A veritable who’s who of Jewish Philanthropy, led by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, commissioned the Paul Taylor Dance company to find out. But frankly, I don’t really want to know. Let me just quote Manolo from the hilarious Manolo’s Shoe Blog:

Manolo says, together for the first time: klezmer, bluegrass, and modern dance! The Manolo he can hardly welcome the death fast enough.

The ck, he is very much agreeing with the Manolo. This crazy fusion, she is cannot be good. The ck would prefer the pointy object through the eye.

  • If ever there was a case for justified self-abacination …. watching this might be it

  • CK, having only seen this picture, I can tell you, it’s the costumes. They are totally gay, and not in the fun-at-parties and you-go-girl kind of way.

  • I don’t know about shoddy. It just looks so…. gay! And I don’t mean as in sexual orientation.

  • this is what comes of shoddy attempts to make jewish culture tredny or ‘relevant’ instead of embracing it and accepting it on its own terms

  • That Manolo is a funny dude. He also seems to have a rocking shoe business on Ebay.

  • Klez and bluegrass are perfect together. Fast, jammy songs, with no drums. Heavy on mandolin, violin, bass-fiddle. Substitute a banjo for a clarinet and it’s just country music from a different country.

I have no idea how modern dance, something I know nothing about, fits in. But I suppose you could get a bunch of hippies to dance to anything.

  • Well I can tell you that Manolo’s taste is beyond reproach. That’s for sure.

  • I don’t know about the modern dance part (I’m not a big fan of that), but klezmer and bluegrass goes very well together. Its not a new idea – its been done by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys. They’re really quite good!

  • Normally I would agree with you, but your comments about Arik Einstein leave me pondering your taste in, well, everything…
