The Rosenbergs, a Jewish couple from New York, were executed by electric chair in 1953. Accused of passing on atomic secrets to the Soviets, theirs was the biggest espionage trial of the Cold War era. Newly released transcripts of the trial now suggest that Ethel Rosenberg was convicted based on testimony that may have been perjured. At the trial, Ethel’s brother and sister in law, David and Ruth Greenglass, testified that Ethel had been directly involved in the espionage ring – that she had typed up a series of notes provided by her brother who worked for a defense contractor at the time. David had recently recanted his testimony and in her grand jury testimony, Ruth testified that she herself wrote out the secrets in longhand. Their perjured testimony at trial however, suggested that Ethel was directly involved in the espionage ring which is what the judge needed in order to sentence her to death along with her husband.
Morton Sobell, convicted along with the Rosenbergs for espionage admitted to spying for the Soviets in an interview with the New York Times this past Friday. “Sobell said he believes Ethel Rosenberg was aware of espionage by her husband but didn’t actively participate. “What was she guilty of? Of being Julius’s wife,” he said.”
“The Rosenberg case illustrates the excesses that can occur when we’re afraid,” said Meredith Fuchs, general counsel to the National Security Archive, one of the private groups that fought in court to get the testimony released… In the 1950s, we were afraid of communism; today, we’re afraid of terrorism. We don’t want to make the same mistakes we made 50 years ago,” Fuchs said.
The prosecutors were clearly hoping to get Julius to spare his wife’s life by providing them with the names of other spies they were working with. Their over zealousness did not work and the Rosenbergs went to their deaths without giving up any names. While it is clear that Julius was guilty, Ethel seems to have been executed unjustly.

They were guilty. So was a Jew named Theodore Alvin Hall who was the youngest physicist working on America’s “Manhattan Project” but unfortunately he was never convicted and got to live out a long full life.
He gave a detailed description of the “Fat Man” plutonium bomb, and of processes for purifying plutonium, to Soviet intelligence.
If you read through the information gathered through the Venona project you see how we should have been tougher against Communists. The Soviets were way too successful in their operations within America especially as it related to our atomic program.

The real story here that co-defendent Morton Sobell admits that they were all involved in espionage – after a generation of using the Rosenbergs as poster-children for horror of “witch hunts” and “McCarthyism”.
Turns out it wasn’t such a witch hunt after all – they really were spies.
But Sobell – like many younger lefties – still thinks that the ethics that apply to mere mortals don’t apply to Bearers of Truth like him and his buddies. From the interview:

The Rosenbergs were not the best Americans ever, but they were scapegoats (Hello Pollard?) who definitely did not merit the death penalty. They were the victims of anti-Communist hysteria stoked by politicians and other interests, and said hysteria was not merited given the reality of the situation. Now what can we learn from this today?
This has nothing to do with “leftie hubris” and everything to do with concepts like the rule of law that OUGHT to transcend petty partisan and political considerations.

Ethel was convicted on flimsy evidence (regardless of guilt, you don’t convict of a capital crime without some real damning evidence). But even if she did as accused, why the hell should she get the dp but not David Greenglass – ya know, the guy who actually worked at the lab and facilitated the transmission of secret info? Scumbag sold out his own sister.
I’m with Greg, Ben-David, and Yisrael on this. These people were communist spies and deserved death. These people supported the Soviets and Stalin, who murdered more Jews than Hitler, yet the American Jew left still tries to hold them up as some naive idealists trying to make America better by selling its secrets to it’s enemies.
