Good lord. The holiday season is upon us.

Eran Baron Cohen: Songs in the Key of Hanukkah

Eran is a musician who scored the Borat movie starring his brother, Sacha Baron Cohen. Didja see Y-Love’s cameo? Cool no? Here’s a description of the album from the Web site (where you can get purchase info, pics and more details):

The record is indeed a collection of songs that brings the ancient music of Hanukkah kicking and screaming straight into the 21st Century. Recorded in London, Berlin and Tel Aviv, the songs combine klezmer, reggae, electronica, hip hop, tango, pop and other genres, all fluently woven into something uniquely Baron Cohen’s. The album contains five reinterpretations of classic favorites as well as five original tunes created exclusively for this project, all sung in English, Hebrew or Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish). They are performed by some world-class Jewish singers, including Israeli superstar Idan Raichel, world-music diva Yasmin Levy and New York City-based rapper Y-Love (who actually rhymes in Yiddish!) to name but a few.

Now as long as we’re talking about the dreidel, dreidel, dreidel song, I just can’t pass up this Country and Western gem by Captain Smarty Pants, brought to my attention by Jameel from somewhere deep in the Muqata. Watch the whole thing – it’s a riot:

That was kind of kooky. Enjoy.

  • As a Messianic Jew I find this very unintentionally funny.
(In case people are wondering they probably meant to write “Salvation” in Hebrew and instead wrote Yeshua, which is Jesus.)
    I do like the song.

  • Hmm, could have been a great video, but the “Yeshua” stuff turned it into a giant EPIC FAIL!
