I also write for New Eurasia. One article I came upon recently was about the creation of rap songs about Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces by Turkmen rapper Zumerchas, (YouTube) of Darkroom Possse.
I’m most interested in why this would be a popular topic to rap about in Turkmenistan, which seemingly has its own host of problems, including a huge government blow-up ending with all of the oil-related ministers being fired, banning Peace Corps volunteers, and generally continuing to be an insular nation after years of rule by a dictator who made Stalin look like Nobel Laureate Obama.
I’m guessing it has something to do with Muslim solidarity, or the fact that Turkmen also feel oppressed by their government. In any case, I wonder how much the rapper knows about the issues he raps about in this song and how the Turkmenistani media portrays the conflict. If he really is informed, then I’ll take it back.
But in the meantime, I’d like to offer my rap song about oppressed Silvio Berlusconi:
Yo, Yo, Yo, Silvio!
Yo gotta hang in there, hang in there fo sho’.
The Italian Cabinet don’t want you no’ mo,
But I still love you and your latest ho.
I love the way you wear Armani with flair
I love the way you toussle your non-existent hair
And I agree with you when you say you’re most oppressed
Out of all the d-bags out there, Silv, you know I love you best!

I read your post and wished I’d written it
That cape is totally gay.
even if we do have our own problems it does not mean that we, TURKMEN can not tell others that WE ARE AGAINST ANY WAR!!!!!!!!
no matter which countries fight we will always be against violence, racism, war 4 no reason!!!!
PEACE 4 ALL NATIONS!!!
zumerchas respect!!!
If the turkmen really care about the palestinians, why don’t they bring them over to their country to live??
themicah, Perfect. I couldn’t have added anything to your comment. You are spot on, I think.
Mike, BIG LOLZ.
Nothing like a huge gilt statue to add class to a city square.
I think we should have more of those here in Israel too.
I’d start with a 30ft golden Avigdor Lieberman overlooking Rothschild boulevard in TA.
I’m most interested in why this would be a popular topic to rap about in Turkmenistan, which seemingly has its own host of problems…
Turkmen rappers are interested in Palestine precisely BECA– USE Turkmenistan has so many problems of its own. The most oppressive Muslim governments have spent the last half a century deflecting criticism of their own injustices by focusing their citizens’ wrath on the “other” that is Israel.
In any case, I wonder how much the rapper knows about the issues he raps about in this song…
As you can see from the imagery in the Youtube video, the Turkmen rapper is probably very well informed about Palestinian suffering. I’d be willing to bet, however, that you’re right that he has no clue how that suffering came to be or what the other side’s perspective is.
But to add a bit of editorializing of my own, I believe this is why Cast Lead was so misguided: it provided a treasure trove of “suffering” imagery for the propagandists who inspire (what I assume to be) earnest emotional responses like this rap.
