During last evening’s broadcast of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart riffed on Israeli PM Netanyahu’s speech before the U.S. Congress. At minute 3:30 he jokes about CNN’s use of a flying Jewish Star “wipe” graphic while interviewing Rabbi Boteach in a fight with a leader of J STREET. And at minute 09:50, Stewart calls the Congressional response to the Prime Minister as the “longest blowjob a Jewish man” ever received. Stewart referred to the event as the Jewish holiday of “Suuk On It.” At 10:10 minutes, the show jokes that all the trees planted by the JNF in Israel were used to print ads from Jewish groups in The New York Times this past week.
Speaking of the Congressional speech, Nancy Pelosi says she was tearful. (kind of like the New Testament sentence, “Nancy wept”
The video below shows House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reactions. She called it an “insult” to the country. “The unbreakable bonds between the United States and Israel are rooted in our shared values, our common ideals and mutual interests,” Pelosi said in a statement just after the speech. “That is why, as one who values the U.S. — Israel relationship, and loves Israel, I was near tears throughout the Prime Minister’s speech — saddened by the insult to the intelligence of the United States as part of the P5 +1 nations, and saddened by the condescension toward our knowledge of the threat posed by Iran and our broader commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation.”
In my opinion, the speech was a win-win situation:
The GOP won, because they were seen as standing up to the Obama Administration
The Comedy Central writers won, since they had good fodder for jokes
Jewish organizations won since they had something to energize their base and raise funds.
AIPAC and J-STREET both won, since it rallied their members
The Likud won, since it showed its front-runner as a world leader
The other Israeli political parties won, since they were able to criticize the PM
Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) won since he got to explain oratory
Congressman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) won since she got to highlight alleged man-splaining.
The late Edward Said won, since people will buy his book about “Orientalism.”
Synagogues won, since more people will attend for Purim in order to discuss the speech
CNN got to use a cool new graphic
NPR got to cover the speech by doing a show about “busy” Jewish settlers in Israel.
And Obama and Kerry won, since other nations see them as slightly more impartial negotiators
