Above is the trailer to “Indignation” a film adaptation of a novel by Philip Roth. The movie is set in 1951, as Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a brilliant working class Jewish boy from Newark, New Jersey, travels on scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus’s growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon), and his clashes with the college’s imposing Dean, Hawes Caudwell (Tracy Letts), put his and his family’s best laid plans to the ultimate test.
The reviews thus far have been pretty darn positive. Review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 81% critic approval rating and a 98% audience score. Bill Zwecker of the Chicago Sun Times said “This is one helluva compelling film that presents us with several of the very best performances of the year.” Rafer Guzman at Newsday said “A beautifully realized adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel about minor decisions and major consequences.” Ann Hornaday at the Washington Post opined “Thoughtful and reserved, perhaps even to a fault, “Indignation” winds up packing a wallop far greater than its modest parts might suggest.” Peter Travers at Rolling Stone stated “Schamus delivers Philip Roth to the screen with his claws intact. It’s riveting cinema. Lerman and Letts give performances that will knock the wind out of you.”
