When Disney reached out to actor Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer, Black-ish, the avant-rap group Clipping) to help create a new Hanukkah song for 2020, PUPPY FOR HANUKKAH featuring three children, dancing and lip-syncing, with a plaintive clarinet, tsimbl and chordophone, wishing for a puppy and not just socks or a sweatah was born. Daveed called on his collaborators: William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes.

Earlier this Fall, Daveed Diggs and Clipping released their horrorcore album “Visions Of Bodies Being Burned.” Diggs said, “I was honored when Disney Channel approached me to come up with a fresh Hanukkah tune and embraced the opportunity to share my love of music and a little piece of my culture.”

“Daveed, William and Jonathan created a Hanukkah song for the ages that’s inventive, humorous and relevant as it celebrates the Miracle of Lights, the diverse world we live in, and the universal joy when a family adopts a pet into a child’s life,” said Steven Vincent, vice president, Music and Soundtracks, Disney Branded Television. Musicians featured are Max Kaplan on the clarinet and Hal Rosenfeld on the tsimbl and percussion. The three children in the video are Nalaya Phillips (10); Benjamin Domingo (9); and Ethan Hollingsworth (11). The idea for the song with Daveed came from Jill Hotchkiss, vice-president of creative marketing for Disney Channels Worldwide and her 15 year old daughter. Ms Hotchkiss wanted to use an Australian shepherd puppy, like the one she and Daveed Diggs mother have. The puppy ended up being not a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy as I had originally assumed, but a CORGI (named Jack).
