The Blessing you can recite is B.A.T.O.L.O.G. (Blessed Art Thou…), Oseh M’aseh Bereshit, or
Blessed are You, Lord, our God, Sovereign of the Universe who makes the works of Creation. Or depending on your tradition, you can say Thou, or Du (as in Buber’s Ich und Du), or Monarch, or Yah, or breath, or Milky Way, etc.
It can’t hurt to throw in Psalm 148: “Hallelu-yah. Praise HaShem from the heavens; praise God in the heights. Praise God, all God’s angels; praise God, all God’s hosts. Praise God, SUN and moon…” and a sprinkling of Psalm 121: “A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the mountains: from whence shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth….. the Lord is your shade upon your right hand. The SUN shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night…”
And then end it with a rendition of LET THE SUNSHINE from the Broadway musical, “HAIR.”
I am still trying to figure out this Yeshiva-perpetuated bubameiser. My fourth grader was taught that the sun rotates in its own orbit every 28 years and returns to the spot where it was at the time of its creation. Something about a 6 hour time differential in the solar year? Excuse me, I think I remember learning the sun is nearly 5 Billion years old. He was apparently taught that the sun was created 5769 years ago? WTF? The Dinosaurs are rolling over in their graves with this fucked-up Astronomy lesson.
BTW… LOVE the Broadway song!
