Turns out that the reported anti-semitic attack on a non-Jewish woman in France was a hoax all along. This unfortunate incident doesn’t really change anything. On the eve of Bastille Day, it should be noted that France still sucks. Despite efforts to reduce violence against Jews by suggesting school children watch movies like Schindler’s List and The Piano, attacks against Jews in France continue unabated. On July 8, French President Chirac, accompanied, for dramatic effect, by former cabinet minister and Auschwitz survivor Simone Veil, stated:

Discrimination, anti-semitism, racism – all kinds of racism are spreading insidiously … All these acts reflect the darkest side of human nature. They are unworthy of France. I will do everything to stop them.

Sound familiar? The International Herald Tribune, on Nov. 13, 2003 quoted him as vowing “the greatest vigilance in the prevention, the greatest firmness in the pursuit, the greatest severity and the greatest swiftness in the sanctioning of anti-Semitic acts.” Well, we have yet to see any evidence of swift and severe sanctioning. Or any reduction in real attacks against Jews. So I say to France, Happy Bastille Day. You suck!
