Sorry, Butler fans.

Also, we had mentioned previously that Duke guard, Jon Scheyer is Jewish. That is not the reason we are rooting for his team on Monday’s national championship game, since there are other Jewish players at premier college basketball programs, but it helps. It especially helps write a story about Duke, since it’s historically been a Methodist school. Frankly, I have no idea what Methodists are, compared to, say, Presbyterians or Anglicans, but we can agree that Jewlicious.com is not methodistlicious.com and having Scheyer on Duke’s team helps me find an excuse to write about them.

Jon Scheyer

Jon Scheyer

Scheyer has been playing really well in the NCAA tournament. It turns out that he’s from Illinois and when he played high school ball, he was, of course, an excellent player, but more than that, he led his team to the state championship which they won. The starting five and the sixth man off the bench were all Jewish.

As far as people who care about these things know, this may have been the first Jewish team to win a state championship since the 1930s and ’40s.

You can see Scheyer’s stats and outstanding history on his Wikipedia page, which looks like it was compiled by a really enthusiastic publicist or his mom.

See? Now you want to root for Duke.

  • congradulations duke, I was hoping for the underdog butler. it would have made a great cindarela story. Duke is the new york yankees of college basketball, everyone was rooting for butler. but butler missed the last shot.

  • He’s Jewish — and playing on chag.

That’s a good reason to oppose Duke (not that we need another – full disclosure: I’m a Terp and anything Duke does is bad because it’s Duke)

    • Oh please, I write on “chag” and I drive on “chag.”

Anyway, that was a great game tonight and even though everybody is going on about Butler (their coach needs to learn to be a better loser, in the three clips I saw of him, I didn’t hear him compliment Duke) I have to say that Duke earned their victory.

This was a great tournament, maybe one of the best I’ve followed, and the championship game was a tough, hard-fought battle between two excellent, confident teams. It was great!

  • Presbyterians (from Greek presbyteros = priest) believe in universal priesthood, Anglicans are members of the Established Church of England on British soil (abroad, they’re called “Episcopalians”) and by default, all British citizens that not profess to adhere to any other religion; the theology is mostly in line with that of Roman Catholicism pre-Vaticanum 2, Methodists are into charisma over critical theology (like Pentecostal denominations), for the most part pacifist with a strong emphasis on conservative family values; they were initially called Methodists as mockery of their strong belief that they’d found the “method” to obtain salvation. Hope that helps.
