The video above, a promo for MTV’s Video Music Awards, clearly shows Macklemore using a Shofar to summon people. Is this a nod to the upcoming Jewish High Holidays? A subtle homage to Sumner Redstone, the Jewish owner of MTV? Or is it just… what? I have no idea. I don’t really care. Macklemore and Ryan Lewish are cool as all get go. I can watch them all day long:
For those of you who aren’t Jewish or maybe totally secular, a Shofar is a Ram’s Horn used in Jewish ritual prayer during High Holidays. Duh.
CORRECTION: The horn shown in this video looks like it may have come from a steer. It is thus not in fact a Shofar. Oh well.

Michael, I’m afraid you may be correct. Plus you’re the expert! Oh well. I just wanted an excuse to post a Macklemore and Lewis video…
This is NOT a shofar. Based on the shape of the instrument, and as an authority in shofar, the horn shown in video appears to be from a cow, steer or ox. Under Jewish law, a shofar cannot be made from these species. I suggest you refer to the instrument simply as a horn or blast horn, but not as a shofar.
