Just as Avigdor Lieberman has made a splash in the new the Israeli government, even landing a spot on the 2009 Top 100 Influential Individuals, I have ascended to Jewlicious. However, I am not on the 2009 Top 100 Anything, except probably Chronic Worriers and most militant Sabra humus buyers on the East Coast.

What is the deal with all these Russian Jews lately? Why are they everywhere, and why do you need more of them?  The answer is that, like Nutella, you can never have too much of us.   We are one of the craziest Jewish subgroups out there.  We staunchly identify with being Jewish without being religious (some of us don’t know a shteitel from a dreidel); we LOVE Israel (as evidenced by the video below, which features Russian singer Alexander Rosenbaum shilling for Israel Beiteinu by using appeals that include singing Yom V’Laila repeatedly for added effect); and, we love combining vodka with political incorrectness.

Russian-speaking Jews are Googlers, political dissidents and even jewlers.  We are from Russia, Ukraine, and all the usual shtetl hotspots, but also from Uzbekistan and Armenia.  We have been marked by 70+ years of communism, which completely reformulated the way we looked at ourselves as Jews.  But, now the control is in our hands, and we are making our own way.  We are becoming prominent actors in the Jewish community (For example, I’ve organized more Israel events than Weizmann and Herzl combined in my time as a Hillel intern.)

Thanks to Jewlicious for graciously hosting me.  I’m excited to explore Russian Jewish/Israeli/Nutella issues.

  • Who is the putz with the mohawk hairdo? How does he keep his yarmulka on? Is there any truth to the rumor that Israel will host a Sonderkommando Festival for all living sonderkommando veterans?

  • Dude. Stupid Mohawk and all, the news gets MUCH MUCH worse. read this: http://blogs.jta.org/telegraph/article/2009/05/01/1004826/jtas-100-most-influential-jewish-twitterers

Apparently I am the #2 most influential Jew on twitter, an honor I MUST share with all the writers of Jewlicious because articles from Jewlicious are a regular part of my Twitter feed. So uh… FWIW, Mazal tov to all y’all and I look forward to hearing more about TM scratching or otherwise touching himself…

  • Middle, I’m now following you and waiting for you to scratch your right arm with anticipation.

  • Okay, @themiddle123 has just told the world that he has scratched his left arm. His follower count jumped from 1 to 3 upon the news.

In the meantime, ck with his stupid mohawk, aka @jewlicious, has 1400+ followers. Should I be jealous?

  • The Middle, alas, does not twit. Once upon a time when Twitter was new to the world ck tried to engage The Middle on Twitter. The Middle tried it for about 2 hours and was really really bored so he never twitted again. Maybe he should. Maybe y’all will be really interested to read about when I have to scratch that annoying itch on my left arm. Ahh, that feels better.

  • @ukranian princess Check ya mail! 🙂 Just sent it out. *sorry*

@the_middle You’re on Twitter??? I just thought you lived in that penguin animation on your profile.

  • @rozi Tzavarit=female sabra or Native-born Israeli. Btw, I recently became related to Mountain Jews through marriage, which is pretty awesome because I didn’t know a lot about Bukharian culture before.

    Ashkies…I like it! 🙂

  • vicki, i have no idea what a tsavarit is but i assume it means mountain jew (we’re not too different from ashkies btw, at least not here in america)?

if so, there’s a new word to add to my vocabulary!

and i look forward to your posts 🙂

  • @froylein and @themiddle Thanks for the big welcome! *waves back* 🙂

@ukranian*princess Я думаю, что смогу писать для вашего сайта достаточно нормально. Я приехала в США, когда мне было 5 лет, но умею читать, писать и быть пессимистом пр-русски. Пошли мне e-mail (vicki dot boykis at gmail dot com чтобы обсудить все в деталях. 🙂

@Ben-David Glad that you know the joys of bliny AND Nutella. Your great-grandfather was smart man.

@Elizabeth That’s probably an issue I’ll tackle soon in one of my future posts. I will def. talk about Russian LeZion 😉

@rozi That’s true! But she’s a tzavarit. Still legit. We take credit for everyone.

  • Mazel tov, Vicky. Russian Jews also constitute the largest group of Jews (by country of origin) in Israel, totaling in about a million.

  • I’ll take blini with Nutella any day.

And vodka – as my Hassidic great-grandfather from the Pale of Settlement used to say, “Water rusts the pipes…”
