[update] Gilchrist endorses Huckabee…

LITTLE ROCK, AR – In Iowa today, former Arkansas Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee received a major endorsement from Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project.

Huckabee said he was honored to receive the endorsement. “No one can question Jim’s commitment to this country and the immigration problem. He has mobilized a group of volunteers to go to the border and draw attention to the issue of immigration. All of us want a policy where people come to this country through the front door, not the back door,” said Huckabee during a morning news conference.

I would like to be the first to propose this new term to enter the vernacular of American politics. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was cruising to demolish Mit “My Faith” Romney and Rudi “What Faith” Giuliani. His polls were skyrocketing. The man was in lift-off. And then he decided to commit political suicide. He does a complete 180 on Cuba, and attacks immigrants. Even though his pro-immigrant policies got him elected, and help catapult him to popularity.

Step one: Flip Flop on Cuba

As governor of Arkansas five years ago, Mike Huckabee joined a bipartisan chorus of politicians who concluded that the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba was bad for businesses. Now that he’s a top-tier candidate for president, Huckabee has decided he favors the embargo — so much so that he vowed Monday to outdo even President Bush in strangling the regime of Cuban President Fidel Castro and punishing those who do business there.

Step two: Scape-goat illegal immigrants

The Secure America Plan
A 9-Point Strategy for Immigration Enforcement and Border Security

Overview: Implement a broad-based strategy that commits the resources of the federal government to the enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population…..

Propose to provide all illegal immigrants a 120-day window to register with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and leave the country.

I am not voting in the Republican primaries and I am not endorsing any candidate, yet. I just can’t help but marvel at the ability of politicians to show more elasticity than contortionists. Dem or Republican alike, these front running candidates adopt strategies as fast as new hairstyles on issues of major importance. Romney was pro-choice when he ran for Gov….

I’m no prophet, or a prophet’s son, but I am going to guess that Mike will tank in the polls. Which is just fine.

  • If, as voters, we did not tolerate or encourage this behavior, this ridiculous political process would not happen.

It has been shown that politicians who tell the truth and are real with the voters rarely win. It’s all theatre, and it’s what we want as Americans. We want soundbites over real solutions, pretty faces in lieu of talent, and a feel-good charisma over any real credentials for the job.

Once we want something different and demand it, things will change.

  • “He does a complete 180 on Cuba, and attacks immigrants.”

And so has the Rabbi. You have all the language nuance of an open-border extremist Rabbi. Huck is not attacking ‘immigrants’. He’s attacking illegal border crossers.

Just as bad as the extremists on the other-side who think they can deport illegals we let in and let stay and let get routed with family. Not going to happen and shouldn’t.

We do need to start enforcing our immigration laws however. Requiring an ‘enforced’ ID card to work here is the solution. Legacy illegals we let stay for more than say two years, get an ID card automatically with a pathway to citizenship they MUST complete to show good faith with their new country.
