A Tale of Two T-shirts
Apollo Braun, aka Doron Braunshtein is well known for being provocative. He has a shop on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side of New York where he sells a wide variety of clothing items, many of his own design. He’s received a bit of publicity of late when a woman wearing one of his t-shirts was assaulted. Why? Because the t-shirt read “Obama is my Slave” and I guess the women assaulting her found it offensive. In typical overly-litigious American fashion, she now plans on suing Braun for “all he’s got.” Braun has in the past also marketed shirts with messages such as Obama=Hitler and Jews Against Obama.
Braun has been or is scheduled to be interviewed by Time Magazine, The Guardian, Fox News and Russian Vogue. This story has created quite a shit storm with the blogs abuzz and the traditional media ready to follow. Into this frenzy steps in Dan Sieradski of the Orthodox Anarchist and the JTA. After calling Braun a “batshit crazy publicity whore” and “a despicable bigot and a paranoid fool” in a turgidly written post about this story, he offers his own t-shirt (pictured above to the right) where he claims that Braun (who is Israeli) is living proof that Zionism=Racism. After his shirt was called “retarded” by Harry in the comments section, Sieradski added a clarification at the bottom of his post that makes about as much sense as most of what he writes.
Braun told me that “as an artist my job is to say whatever the fuck I want. I’m an agitator, this is what I do.” He further added “My shirt isn’t about Obama, it’s about freedom of speech.” When asked if he was a racist Braun answered “I’m not a racist! I love black cock!” And his reaction to Sieradski’s post and t-shirt? “Dan Sieradski is fabulous, I love him! He is free like me to express whatever he wants to!” So who is Braun voting for? “I am voting for Britney Spears. She is the face of America.”
Braun’s $69 shirt is available at his store on Orchard below Houston or on his Web page. Sieradski’s shirt, selling for $100 (Limited Edition!) is available by following the instructions on his post – proceeds will go to “JStreet, Brit Tzedek V’Shalom, the New Israel Fund, and the Union of Progressive Zionists, each of which are working to demonstrate that the love of Israel can also be expressed through the love of humanity.”
