Haliey Welch, also known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl” received a tremendous amount of notoriety thanks to a recent appearance on Tim and Dee TV’s Instagram page:
Haliey has blown up since then and there is no corner of the Internet that hasn’t reacted, responded or featured her in some way – even the Jews have not been spared. Welch recently appeared on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast. During the course of the podcast, Mandel convinced Welch to take an “expedited” DNA test in order to find out more about her ancestry.
The alleged “expedited” results? Haliey Welch is apparently 97.7% Ashkenazi Jew. Haliey, who grew up in Tennessee and was raised by her grandmother, took it all in stride, noting that she visited and enjoyed Katz’s Deli on a recent trip to New York. She also regaled all the Jews in the room with her new-found knowledge of Jewish words like schmuck and putz.
The thing is though, there is no DNA test on the market right now that can reveal your ancestry in 5-minutes. Haliey may or may not be Jewish, but Mandel’s DNA test was a ruse. Maybe they thought it would be funny to tell a girl from rural Tennessee that she was a member of the tribe, but Welch’s response was enthusiastic, totally bereft of guile and, dare I say it given the nature of her fame, totally wholesome.
So, to answer any questions you might have – Hawk Tuah Girl Haliey Welch is in all likelihood not Jewish. Which is a shame, because then we could sell “Hawk Jew-ah” t-shirts – under license from Haliey, of course. It’s also a shame because while Haliey is monetizing her fame, she’s not being a Chazer about it. She’s protecting her intellectual property, having fun, bringing her friends along and absolutely not opening an OnlyFans page – which in this day and age makes her as uniquely classy as the Queen of England, z”l.
