Left: Nice new Menorah at the Kotel. Looks familiar? It used to be part of a synagogue in Gush Katif…
Right: Hanukkah is… the festival of lights! Oh wait, that’s candle lighting at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Not the same thing.
A new survey held by the MAI estimated that Hanukkah 2007 will see only 17.5 million sufganiyot sold – a 4% drop from 2006, citing “the obvious health reasons”. The average Israeli is expected to consume about three sufganiyot during the holiday. Sales are expected to reach $14.04 million.
The MAI survey also revealed that 30% of the sufganiyot sold – some 6 million units – will be “fun-sized”, weighing in at 35 grams, as opposed to the 80 grams of its plumppier siblings… Hanukkah 2007 is expected to yield $1.17 million in candle sales – a 10% rise form last year.

Hanukkah shopping and selling at the shuk – Machaneh yehuda, Jerusalem.
Menorah lighting at the Shuk with Chabad. Lighting the first “candle” honors were given to a random shuk dude who borrowed a Chabad Borsalino hat for the occasion. It went well with his white hoodie. Free warm sufganiyot were then distributed to all. Yay! Day one! Sorry you’re not here with me. I miss you and hope your Menorah lighting will be meaningful.
